The ATA carnet could be useful if you decide to travel outside the European Union with your work equipment. An expert in export formalities explains.
Before taking your work equipment abroad, you must first declare it. You can do this using an ATA Carnet (a contraction of Admission Temporaire and Temporary Admission). This is a goods passport that allows you to export temporarily outside the EU. This document is used to cross borders without having to pay taxes or import duties.
Tatyana Ioudina, head of export formalities at BECI, the Brussels Chamber of Commerce and Union of Enterprises in Brussels, tells us all we need to know about requesting an ATA carnet.
When is an ATA carnet needed?
The ATA carnet is necessary when you plan to travel and take your professional equipment with you. It saves you from having to pay customs clearance and import fees in the country you are visiting. In other words, it allows you to facilitate the administrative tasks involved in all conventional temporary exports at customs.
Who can request an ATA carnet?
Anyone wishing to take professional equipment with them when travelling outside the European Union. Applying for an ATA carnet is not just reserved for self-employed people, entrepreneurs or companies; private individuals may also need one, and so should request one.
How to obtain one?
Directly on the BECI website, in the ‘Export formalities’ menu, on the ATA Carnet page. This will give you access to the e-ata.eu platform. Once you're there, sign up and we'll make an appointment with you to explain everything in detail.
How long does it take to get the ATA Carnet?
As soon as you log on to the platform and register, we will send you all the information you need. The procedure can then take up to 10 working days.
In addition to the ATA Carnet, BECI can help you with the administrative formalities involved in exporting. Discover all our export formalities services here! |
