The ATA carnet (a contraction of Admission Temporaire and Temporary Admission) is a document intended for temporary exports only, enabling goods to cross borders without paying taxes and duties on entering a country.
An ATA carnet is required in three specific cases:
- in the case of a trade fair, exhibition or similar organisation;
- during transit of professional equipment;
- when presenting samples abroad .
An ATA carnet is generally valid for one year and can only be used in countries that have signed the ATA Convention. You can find this list on the ATA Carnet website. The task of issuing ATA carnets falls within the exclusive remit of the Chambers of Commerce.
For the exporter, an ATA Carnet represents a saving in terms of expenditure, as it exempts the goods from customs duties and taxes in the countries in the ATA chain.
How much does an ATA carnet cost?
The price of a Carnet is calculated as follows:
- Fixed price: €229.50 - Carnet application forms - Carnet forms even for 1 to 3 trips (free choice of CCI) - ‘Making up’ the Carnet (filling in the Carnet) - Insurer's handling fee - WCF and Fédération fees.
- Additional sheet: €0.65
- Non-member surcharge: €45
- Carnet return guarantee (deposit): €150
- Variable price depending on the value of the goods (to be added to the fixed cost):
- Less than €25,000: 0.857%
- From €25,000 to €74,999.99: 0.673%.
- From €75,000 to €249,999.99: 0.437%.
- Greater than or equal to €250,000: 0.294%.
Example 1: The value of my goods is €15,000
- I am a member: €229.50 + €150 + (15,000 x 0.857%) = €508.05
Example 2: The value of my goods is €85,000
- I am not a member: €229.50 + €150 + €45 + (85,000 x 0.437%) = €795.95
