Most of the tunnels in Brussels, which were closed over the summer, have now been reopened. What changes can motorists expect?

At the beginning of the summer, we announced the closure of certain tunnels in the Brussels-Capital Region during the summer period. The regional public service, Brussels Mobility, had undertaken maintenance and renovation work on several tunnels in the Region. Most of them are now accessible again. Here are the changes to be expected at the start of the new school year.

Major tunnels back to normal

The Delta Tunnel, which had been closed for asbestos removal and structural repairs, reopened on Saturday 24 August. ‘However, the tunnel will remain closed every night from 10 pm to 6 am, for final works, until the end of December 2024’, says Brussels Mobility.

As for the Tervueren tunnel, it will be fully accessible from September 1, putting an end to the restrictions that had reduced it to a single lane in each direction. This reopening should improve traffic flow in the area.

Work in progress

Despite the reopening of some tunnels, work is still in progress. This is the case in the Schuman district. On rue de la Loi, work around the Charlemagne building is temporarily closing a lane of traffic at the tunnel exit until 16 September.

Renovation work on the Beaulieu bridge will continue until September 13, while work on the Esplanade, between the Berlaymont and the Juste Lipse building, will continue until early 2025.

‘In Brussels, there is also a need to completely overhaul the implementation of mobility plans and to rethink accessibility and connectivity’, BECI points out, which has made mobility one of the fundamental aspects of its memorandum.
