Brussels, February 21, 2025 – Eight months after the elections, Brussels still has no government. The formateur’s mandate could end this Friday at 5 PM. And then what? Speaking with one voice, representatives of Brussels' workers and businesses are calling on political parties to take responsibility at last and prevent a deadlock with severe consequences.
Brussels is at a critical juncture. While the Region faces multiple challenges—particularly in response to decisions made by the new federal government—urgent action is needed to move beyond political infighting. We expect our political representatives to adopt a responsible and constructive approach, in the interest and respect of all those who live, work, and do business in Brussels.
Our commitment to Brussels, combined with the pressing need for a functioning government, compels us to act together and mobilize all forces to bring political parties to their senses and shape Brussels’ future.
The absence of a regional government is a serious and legitimate concern for Brussels’ citizens, workers, and businesses. Every day without a government worsens an already precarious situation. The next government will have to face major challenges:
- A democratic and institutional crisis at a time when the fight against populism is already a daily battle. Moreover, Brussels’ autonomy is at risk. As a national, European, and international capital, Brussels could face federal oversight if it fails to take control of its own future.
- A socio-economic and financial crisis that is weakening the Region and its institutions. Every day without a government prevents necessary action to address growing social, economic, and budgetary consequences. Moreover, it is crucial to plan policies that can effectively respond to new challenges stemming from federal government decisions—without last-minute improvisation or emergency fixes.
- A major security challenge and growing societal issues: The safety, security, and well-being of Brussels’ residents must remain a top priority. Brussels needs a fully functioning government to coordinate prevention and security measures and to respond to the evolving needs of society across the Region.
Inaction is negligence. Brussels has "Had Enough of Government Gridlock."
We call on Brussels' political leaders—across all democratic parties—to wake up and take responsibility. It is time to stop acting like politicians and start acting like stateswomen and statesmen, rising to the challenge and meeting the expectations of Brussels' citizens.
Our Region deserves better than a doomed status quo. Brussels must become a hub of attractiveness, economic development, full employment, and social justice, where quality of life comes first. The next government will be a collective success—or it will not be at all. To achieve this, we need shared values, ambition, strong alliances, and the will to rise above political divides.
Brussels deserves a bright future. Let’s build it together. The social partners are ready.
