Shifting Economy

Economic transition is a global issue. But to know where to start, the local level is essential.

In the Brussels government, an entire ministry is leading this transition, known as the ‘Shifting Economy’ or regional economic transition strategy. The aim of this strategy is to translate the UN's sustainable development objectives to the Brussels level.

Europe has established a reference framework: the Green Deal. Its aim is to transform climate and environmental challenges into opportunities and to make the European economy carbon neutral by 2050. To achieve this, it is going to play with the criteria for awarding public aid to encourage ‘greener’ economic activities. The Shifting Economy is playing with the same codes. The Brussels Region is redirecting economic aid so that by 2030 it will be entirely devoted to companies committed to economic transition.

In addition, the Brussels government is developing support measures to raise awareness and inform businesses so that they decide to commit to gradually changing their business model. Adaptation will therefore be the watchword in the years to come.

The Brussels-Capital Region's economic transition strategy aims to transform the Brussels economy so that it is completely carbon-free by 2050.
